Following the appointment of Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, previously BHF Chair in Cardiology and one of the world’s leading cardiovascular investigators, as Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation, the University of Leicester is seeking to make this strategic replacement appointment of a researcher of the highest calibre, to further strengthen their research endeavor, with research excellence matched to one of their areas of strength in Genomics, Biomakers, Imaging, and Cardiovascular Protection and Intervention.
Recruitment to this post is being undertaken in concert with the British Heart Foundation to ensure that the appointee is of an appropriate calibre to take up a BHF Chair, in conjunction with the University appointment. If appropriate, the appointee will also assume a leadership role in the Cardiovascular Theme of the recently awarded NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre.
Now is an incredibly exciting time to be working in Leicester. The University of Leicester is placed 37th (out of 2,600) for Clinical Medicine in the Shanghai rankings; 7th in the UK. Research income has doubled in the last year, and four cross-disciplinary research institutes have recently been established, two of which are based in the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology (Leicester Precision Medicine Institute and Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology). A state of the art teaching facility has been opened, to coincide with the launch of a radically innovative new medical curriculum. The College is also significantly refreshing its teaching offer, including a Foundation Widening participation course in Medicine, courses in Nursing and Midwifery with Leadership, and a Masters in Cardiovascular Sciences. In addition, the College’s international strategy has advanced markedly, with proposals to develop significant institutional partnerships based in China and in the US.
This position comes with a significant support package. In addition to the funding provided through a British Heart Foundation Chair, and the extensive research facilities established and developed by Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, both the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the University will contribute additional support. Support could include a clinical or non-clinical Professor/Associate Professor, research staff and PhD studentships.
The University is affiliated with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and an appropriate honorary contract will be negotiated for clinically qualified applicants.
The Department is a proud holder of an Athena SWAN Silver award and we especially welcome applications from female candidates.
