The University of Leicester is seeking to appoint a Professor in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Medicine or Cardiovascular Sciences to replace the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Chair held by Professor Sir Nilesh Samani following his appointment as the Medical Director of the BHF. Recruitment to this post is being undertaken in concert with the BHF, in the expectation that candidates of a calibre appropriate for a BHF Chair will be encouraged to apply for BHF Chair status with associated support.
The chair-holder can be either a translational or clinical scientist. Our preference is a chair-holder with an interest in cardiovascular genomics to continue the work established by Professor Samani. However, applicants with research expertise in a related area or in one of the other research strengths of the Department will also be considered; these include Cardiovascular Proteomics, Cell Signalling and Cell Biology, and Cardiovascular Pathophysiology and Clinical Trials.
The post-holder will benefit from the considerable investment in cardiovascular genomics in Leicester in the last 10 years. This includes state-of-the-art facilities in the £12.5M University of Leicester British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre and the John and Lucille van Geest Foundation Cardiovascular Proteomics Facility. Cardiovascular genomics is a core theme in the NIHR Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre from April 2017) and the new Leicester Precision Medicine Institute. The Department has strong and well-established links with national and international centres in the field.
The University is affiliated with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and an appropriate honorary contract will be negotiated for clinically qualified applicants. The Department is a proud holder of an Athena SWAN Silver award and we especially welcome applications from female candidates.
